A COMMUNITY TO SAVE

We visited Mende as scheduled. Our target spot was a slum within Kosofe, a small niche in Mende.

Note:

A slum is a heavily populated urban informal settlement characterized by substandard housing and squalor. While slums differ in size and other characteristics, most lack reliable sanitation services, supply of clean water, reliable electricity, timely law enforcement and other basic services.

There was a guide on ground willing to take us around. As shown in the following pictures, poverty is the main stay for the locals within this small community. The settlement is placed directly above a swamp and as the images shows the settlers live on poorly constructed wooden houses. In some a section settlers depend on a makeshift wooden bridge as a connection to their respective abodes. Environmental Sanitation of course is hardly observed here. Prevalent health challenges includes malaria, diarrhea and cholera. GreenTouch hopes to in no distant time visit the area again but this time with health care and sanitation materials for the locals
